5 Ways to Unwrap the Christmas Joy of Giving – Besides Presents!

By: Andrew Marsh

This Christmas let’s focus on being truly present rather than just giving presents.

This season is a chance to reflect the generosity of Jesus—the greatest gift of all—by sharing love and kindness with those around us.  And if parents involve their children in these gifts of the heart, then all the better – it will change their view of Christmas for their lifetimes ahead.

Whether it’s your time, resources, or kindness, small acts can make a big difference. Here are five ways you and your family can embrace the joy of giving this Christmas:

1 – Welcome a Christmas “Orphan”

Do you know someone living far from family this Christmas? Invite them to join your celebration or come along to a Christmas church service. Your simple act of inclusion can remind them of the love and joy of belonging.

2 – Share Presence, Not Just Presents

Visit a retirement home or a lonely neighbour. Sing Christmas carols, share stories, or simply spend time together. Your presence can bring comfort and warmth to someone who might otherwise feel forgotten during the holidays.

3 – Give Globally

Extend your generosity to children around the world whose families struggle to meet basic needs. Partner with an organization that provides food, education, and hope alongside the message of Jesus — because Christmas is, after all, His birthday. Consider gifting through programs like Compassion Australia’s ‘Gifts of Compassion’ catalogue, providing ethical gift options for Australians looking to make a positive difference for children living in poverty.

4 – Assemble a Christmas Hamper

Get your children involved by helping them put together food hampers for an elderly neighbour or a family in need. This hands-on act of kindness shows them how their efforts can bring joy to others. Make it extra special by including handwritten cards or homemade treats.

5 – Volunteer Your Time

Offer your helping hands to serve meals, wrap presents, or support festive community events. Many organisations such as the Salvation ArmyMission Australia and Habitat for Humanity are looking for volunteers to make Christmas (and life generally) special for those in need. Your time and care can transform someone’s holiday.

If your time is short right now, resolve this Christmas to connect with an organisation during 2025 to put your shoulder to the wheel and your heart behind the cause.
