Documentary Feature – The First Silent Night
Join renowned actor Simon Callow as he uncovers the moving origins of one of the world’s most popular carols in The First Silent Night. Simon journeys to the Austrian village of Oberndorf as well as the city of Salzburg. There we meet two impoverished children – Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber – who grew up in Austria’s cobbled streets and wooded villages. The hard years that shaped them would also destine them to meet one day in a poor country church to unite Gruber’s music and Mohr’s text into this classic carol about the birth of a third poor boy on a special night in Bethlehem. Silent Night would speak a message of hope to their country, recovering from the harsh Napoleonic wars that had devastated their cities and villages. The guns would fall silent at last, replaced by the gentle strains of music.

Movie – A Winter Song

Featured Program – A WINTER SONG
A WINTER SONG is a heartfelt holiday film that harmonises the magic of music with the power of connection and healing. The story revolves around Clio, a struggling singer-songwriter, and Fred, a retired musician grieving the loss of his wife. Their unexpected friendship becomes the heart of the movie as they rediscover their passion for music and life through each other.
The film’s standout feature is its music, which is both emotionally rich and thematically resonant. Clio’s original songs, especially the poignant “Winter Song,” capture the bittersweetness of loss and hope. Her acoustic performances are raw and genuine, reflecting her character’s journey of self-discovery. Fred’s rendition of the classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” adds a nostalgic warmth, grounding the movie in timeless holiday tradition. Together, their duet of “Silent Night” is a climactic moment, symbolising the blending of their worlds and the healing power of music.
The chemistry between Clio and Fred is as compelling as the songs they share, with Ashanti’s natural charisma perfectly complementing Stan Shaw’s grounded presence. The film strikes a balance between holiday cheer and emotional depth, making it more than just a seasonal story—it’s a testament to how music can bridge generations and mend broken hearts.
A Winter Song is a beautiful reminder of the power of friendship, the magic of music, and the enduring spirit of the holiday season. It’s a must-watch for anyone seeking inspiration and comfort during the colder months.
