A GOOD Tech Update

BY: Sharon Fitness for GOOD

At GOOD, we’re incredibly grateful to our supporters for making it possible to update our computers and technology. In the fast-paced world of TV and streaming, staying up to date with the latest equipment is essential. These upgrades allow our team to work more efficiently, from editing programs to managing the seamless delivery of content to your screens. Your generosity ensures we have the tools needed to maintain the high standards of quality and reliability that our viewers expect and deserve.

For our staff, having state-of-the-art technology is more than a convenience – it’s a game-changer. Updated computers mean faster processing times, smoother workflows, and the ability to adapt to the latest industry advancements. This not only enhances our team’s creativity and productivity but also positions GOOD to remain competitive in an ever-evolving landscape.

We know tech nerds like us are interested in exactly what we’re working with, so here’s a rundown of just some of the systems we use every day:

Our production and editing team currently use Intel iMacs, but we’ve just bought one of the new Mac Minis with a M4 Pro chip and 10Gb networking. Once we’ve put it through its paces and checked that it will do the job we’ll roll these out to all production staff. Meanwhile our graphic designer uses a Mac Studio with M1 Max.

We have a new custom workstation from Aftershock on order for the IT department. We went with the Audio Production workstation (no need for a graphics card) with a AMD Ryzen 9 9900X, 32GB 6000MHz DDR5 and a 2TB Crucial T705 M.2 NVMe (R 14500MBs | W 12700). Most of our servers run Ubuntu Server LTS, and this machine will match that for a consistent dev environment.

Our broadcast machines currently use AJA KONA LHe Plus graphics cards, but we plan to upgrade to Blackmagic Decklink SDI 4K cards when we replace the old Intel Mac Minis with new custom-built mini-ITX PCs. They’ll also run Ubuntu, playing out videos using ffmpeg.

Phew, that’s a lot of specs, right? Suffice to say, we’ll be in good stead to keep ahead of the game into the future with this lot.

Thanks to your support, we can continue sharing stories of hope, faith, and inspiration, knowing we have the resources to stay ahead. We couldn’t do it without you – thank you for being part of the GOOD journey!
