GOOD Movie Review: Mums’ Night Out

BY: Sharon Fitness for GOOD.

New to GOOD, premiering May 31, MUMS’ NIGHT OUT is a lighthearted family comedy that aims to celebrate the chaos and wonder of parenthood, particularly from the perspective of mums in desperate need of a break. Directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin, the film stars Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy), Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), among others. The plot revolves around Allyson (played by Drew), a stressed-out mum who plans a fun, relaxing and peaceful night out with her friends. Of course, everything goes hilariously awry.

The movie has been praised for its relatable portrayal of the challenges and pressures of motherhood, with a focus on the often overlooked need for parents, especially mothers, to take a break and enjoy some downtime. The humour is family-friendly, with slapstick elements and situational comedy that is amusing and entertaining. The film sometimes leans quite heavily into stereotypes about gender roles and parenting, which is probably to be expected, considering the themes and context.

MUMS’ NIGHT OUT has loads of positive and faith-based messages, emphasising the importance of supporting one another and recognising one’s own worth beyond parental duties. The performances, particularly by Sarah Drew, are believable and relatable, providing both heart and humour to the film.

While not groundbreaking in terms of plot or comedic innovation, MUMS’ NIGHT OUT serves its purpose as a feel-good movie that viewers will find refreshing and reassuring. It’s a film that allows for laughter amidst the chaos of parenting, offering a gentle reminder that it’s okay to seek out personal fulfilment and support.

Overall, MUMS’ NIGHT OUT is a great choice for those looking for a clean, cheerful film that delves into the ups and downs of parenthood with a good dose of humour and a touch of warmth.
