What did you think of WHEN CALLS THE HEART S13 Ep12?
How do you say goodbye to a season that has had Hearties laughing, crying, debating, cheering and counting down proposal interruptions for months?
If the live watch of Harvest Moon was anything to go by, the answer is: with tissues, tears and one very emotional chat thread.
Before the finale even began, Emily had a warning for everyone: “Don’t forget the tissues too.”
Looking back, that might have been the most accurate prediction of the entire season.
So what did everyone have to say? What did you think of season 13 episode 12?
The Final Countdown
The mood before the episode was equal parts excitement and denial.
“I can’t believe it’s the finale,” wrote Emily. “There are some surprises in there.”
“Definitely goes too fast!” agreed Heather.
Wen was already mourning the end of the season before it had even started.
“I’m going to have withdrawals after the season is finished!!!”
As the countdown began, Hearties settled in for one last visit to Hope Valley. Wen had her hot Milo ready in the teapot, along with a feline viewing companion, while Rheanna joined the watch after returning home from hospital following an operation.
“Ready to chill and watch the finale,” she wrote.
Then the clock struck Hope Valley time.
“Here we go!” posted Emily.
Poor LJ
The episode opened with LJ struggling with his illness and, perhaps even worse, a bowl of oatmeal.
“Poor LJ,” sympathised Joy.
“I don’t blame LJ with his oatmeal lol,” joked Emily.
“Yeah not an oatmeal fan myself either,” agreed Sharon.
But beneath the breakfast complaints was something more emotional.
“Poor little guy – feeling the weight of his illness,” Sharon observed.
That theme would run through much of the episode.
Harvest Festival Preparations Begin
As Hope Valley prepared for the Harvest Festival, there were some familiar faces returning.
“Look who’s home!” posted Emily.
Moments later the chat exploded.
“Angela!” shouted Emily.
“Angela!!” echoed Tracy.
“Angela!” added Joy.
“Woohoo!” celebrated Wen.
“That’s one excited Mama,” noted Sharon as Minnie welcomed her daughter home.
Hearties were delighted to see Angela back, with Wen observing that “Angela is looking grown up.”
Joy also loved seeing actor Viv Leacock sharing scenes with his real-life children again, commenting that it was lovely seeing “Joseph and his real-life children act together.”
Rosemary, Gwendolyn and a Special Dress
One of the sweetest storylines of the finale involved Gwendolyn.
“Gwendolyn is wearing the dress!” noticed Emily.
“Aww so sweet, wearing the dress for Rosemary,” replied Sharon.
“Aaw, Gwen looks lovely in the dress,” added Wen.
Emily reflected on just how far the character had come.
“Gwendolyn has come a long way since she started at the Coulters.”
As the episode unfolded, it became increasingly clear that leaving Hope Valley was going to be difficult for Gwendolyn and equally difficult for the Coulters.
Nathan’s Plan… Or Lack Of One
Meanwhile, Nathan was still trying to find the perfect moment to propose.
“Nathan telling Bill about his plan but then it failed,” reported Emily.
“Naathan sharing the plan with Bill!” laughed Wen.
Sharon had reached her limit.
“Forget the ‘plan’ Nathan, just seize the moment!”
Thankfully Bill had some wisdom to share.
“Wise words from Bill to Nathan,” wrote Tracy.
“Bill giving great advice to Nathan about the future,” added Emily.
Hearties everywhere seemed united on one point: stop planning and just ask her already.
Lucas and Edie
The return of Edie quickly grabbed everyone’s attention.
“Edie is back too!” posted Emily.
When the pair shared scenes together, Kelly summed up the audience reaction perfectly.
“Just kiss you two crazy kids.”
“It’s so plain that these two like each other!” agreed Wen.
But things took a surprising turn when Edie revealed she was heading to New York.
“Edie is going to New York!” Emily announced.
“Has Lucas missed his chance???” wondered Sharon.
LJ Gets His Adventure
One of the most heartwarming moments of the episode came when Nathan decided to make LJ’s dream come true.
“The water tower!” posted Emily.

“Nathan is giving LJ his dream wish!” wrote Wen.
Elizabeth looked understandably nervous.
“Elizabeth wondering if this is a good idea haha,” laughed Sharon.

When Nathan and LJ began climbing, the chat held its collective breath.
“Brave LJ climbing the tower!” said Wen.
“Braver than me lol. I’m scared of heights,” admitted Emily.

“What a view LJ!” she added moments later.
The emotional payoff hit hard.
“Nawww so sweet… big love all around there,” wrote Sharon.
“A bit teary here already lol,” admitted Emily.
Then came one of the episode’s most touching lines.

“‘You made my little boy fly’… he sure did,” wrote Sharon.
And then…
Another interruption.
“Not again!!!!” cried Wen.
“GAH! interrupted again,” posted Sharon.
“So close Nathan ๐๐๐” laughed Kelly.
“Maybe we should start an interruption count,” sighed Tracy.
At this point, the proposal had become Hope Valley’s longest-running mystery.
Allie Has Had Enough
Nobody was more frustrated than Allie.
“Shhh Allie lol,” wrote Joy.
“Allie is so wise,” she added moments later.
“Allie getting very impatient,” observed Emily.
“Yeah Nathan. Don’t wait too long!!!” agreed Tracy.
At this stage, Allie was basically acting as the spokesperson for every Heartie watching at home.
Tears Start Early
As Gwendolyn struggled with the reality of leaving Hope Valley, emotions began building.
“Poor Gwendolyn, she’s upset about leaving.”
“Such a good little actress!!!” Sharon commented.
“Such a lovely moment between Rosie and Gwen,” added Wen.
“Aww Rosemary โค๏ธ” wrote Kelly.
The tears were only just getting started.
Harvest Festival Fun
Eventually the Harvest Festival arrived.
“Here’s the Harvest Festival,” announced Emily.

“Everyone’s getting involved,” observed Wen.
“It looks like lots of fun!”
Viewers loved seeing the lighter moments.
“Wow good juggling from Ned and Mike!” laughed Sharon.

“Lucas and his magic show.”
“Lucas is so good at his magic tricks,” said Wen.
Sharon spotted Lucas sneaking romantic messages into his performance.
“Secret messages for Edie about mended hearts!!”
“So flirty Lucas. I love it ๐๐” replied Kelly.
“Edie looks besotted,” added Emily.

Then there was this sweet moment. Did you catch this loving look from Jed?? Maybe ‘Jolly’ will get their moment next season?

Governor Lucas?
Then came one of the biggest surprises of the episode.
“Oooh Lucas stepping down!!” posted Tracy.
“Lucas stepping down as governor!” wrote Emily.
“Oh wow ๐ฎ” reacted Kelly.
“Hes putting in Mayor Hickam as a candidate!”
“Governor Maisie … watch out world!!” joked Tracy.
Sharon immediately asked the question everyone was thinking.
“Lucas stepping down? What’s he going to do now? He sold the saloon!”
As Lucas described Edie as his “northern star”, viewers sensed exactly where his future might be heading.
The Benson Hills Goodbye
The emotional centre of the episode came during the farewell for the Benson Hills children.
“What a lovely story from Rupert,” wrote Emily.
“Rupert is so good at expressing his losses and his gains!” added Wen.
“Sweet stories from all the kids,” said Sharon.
“And a lovely thank you from Gwendolyn.”
Then came the balloon release.
“The balloon release was such a wonderful idea,” wrote Wen.
“Oh wow such a beautiful moment with their thoughts and feelings going up in the balloons,” said Sharon.
By now the tissues were working overtime.
“Is someone cutting onions!!!” Sharon asked.
“There must be an awful lot of onions lol,” replied Emily.
“Internet onions lol,” joked Joy.
“Phew, that was emotional – everyone ok??!?!” Sharon asked.
“Nope definitely tears here.”
“Ok ๐ kind of ๐” admitted Kelly.

Mike Delivers The Pep Talk
Maisie wasn’t convinced she should run for governor.
“‘I’m a lot of things but I’m not likeable’ ๐,” quoted Tracy.
“Yeah time she gets a lecture from Mike!” laughed Sharon.
“You tell her Mike!!” posted Tracy.
“Good words Mike!” agreed Emily.
Wen’s favourite line?
“Buck up, buttercup.”
Lucas and Edie Finally Deliver
Then came the moment many viewers had been hoping for.
“Edie and Lucas!!! Hoping for that kiss,” wrote Wen.
“Yes!!!!” agreed Kelly.
When it finally happened, the chat exploded.
“YAY!” posted Tracy.
“YES!!! ๐๐๐๐” celebrated Wen.
“Hooray!!!!!!!!!” added Kelly.
“There’s their kiss! I wanted to say it was coming lol,” admitted Emily.
“Awww you get him, Edie!!” cheered Sharon.
Even Tracy, who had taken a while to warm to the pairing, conceded:
“I can finally endorse that relationship for Lucas.”

Goodbye Gwendolyn
Then came perhaps the most emotional scenes of the entire episode.
“Lee and Rosemary a bit sad that Gwendolyn is leaving.”
“Sweet gifts from Gwendolyn to the Coulters.”
“Getting a bit teary now,” admitted Wen.
“Anymore onions going around?” asked Emily.
The response was immediate.
“No I’m not ok now,” wrote Kelly.
“๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ”
“๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ”
“๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ”
The comments said it all.

All Roads Lead To One Moment
Then came the moment everyone had waited an entire season for.
“Is this the moment we are waiting for?” asked Emily.
“Come on already!” replied Joy.
“Here we go!” posted Wen.
“Take a walk with me ๐ฅน,” wrote Tracy.
“Oooh, it’s happening… Allie sees!” added Sharon.
When Elizabeth unexpectedly started talking first, the chat briefly panicked.
“What???” wrote Wen.
“Oh Elizabeth what are you doing?” cried Emily.
“Now Elizabeth interrupts!!!” laughed Tracy.

“A reference to the plaque he gave her a few seasons ago!” Emily noticed.

Finally, Nathan got the chance.
“Aaw Nathan, so lovely,” said Wen.
“Yesssss.”
“YAYAY.”

“About time!!!!! Wooo hoooo,” celebrated Kelly.
Then came the answer.
“And there it is!! I LOVE all the throw backs. ‘Yeah but I was gonna’,” wrote Tracy.

The tears returned instantly.
“More onions going around?”

“Bawling my eyes out up here in Qld!” admitted Rach.
“Me too!” replied Emily.

One Last Surprise
Just when viewers thought the episode was over, Hope Valley had one final surprise.
“Awww so lovely,” wrote Sharon as Elizabeth’s journal narration played over a montage of happy faces. Everyone contented and with those they love the most.

Then Emily suddenly asked:
“Ooo who is this!”
The answer triggered perhaps the loudest reaction of the night.
“ABIGAIL!”
“ABIGAIL!!!!!!โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ”
“Abigail!!!! YES!!!!”
“Abigail finally.”
“She’s home!!!”
“Abigail!!!!”
After years away, Abigail Stanton was back in Hope Valley.

A Perfect Ending
As the credits rolled, Hearties processed everything they had just experienced.
“Aww it’s over!!!!”
“Wow, finished with a bang,” said Wen.
“What a cliffhanger… a good one though, no one being shot!” joked Sharon.
“Haha so refreshing,” replied Tracy.
“I am so happy with this ending!” said Joy.
“Well that was a tear jerker wasn’t ready for that ๐๐,” admitted Kelly.
“Great season!” wrote Emily.
“Finished till next year!!!!!” added Wen.
Rach perhaps summed it up best.
“Crying!!! That was such a wonderful episode, so well written and directed, the cinematography and acting was incredible.”
Sharon agreed.
“It’s been an amazing season, so well constructed and put together.”
And judging by the tears, laughter, cheers and emotional exhaustion in the comments, it’s hard to argue with that assessment.
Season 13 may be over, but for one final Friday night, Hope Valley gave Hearties everything they could have hoped for โ and one unforgettable surprise to take into the wait for Season 14.
