Season 12 Ep2 Recap – When Calls the Valley Voice

BY: Rach Kayrooz for GOOD.

Rosie’s on a mission. Not to buy the latest Vogue mag at The Mercantile, but to prep for her radio show’s debut, The Valley Voice Radio Hour. She’s on the hunt for a story. And some advertisers, no doubt.

There are lots of early birds catching worms in Hope Valley. Allie and Angela are reviewing their book reports and Constable Nathan’s latest films on GOOD.

Elizabeth is enjoying her stroll, catching up with her Hope Valley friends and providing a listening ear to young Allie, who isn’t sure what she wants to do after school, other than check her Insta.

Nathan is checking in on Oliver, who is up to something at the Farmer’s Market stall.  He offsets the cost of living by knocking over 1kg of pumpkin and getting it for a bargain!

Amid a slow news week, Rosie pops into The Mercantile, hoping Florence and Ned will spill the tea. Apparently, a blue-ribbon pig at the County Fair, and hazelnuts, aren’t going to bring in the ratings. But will the comic book craze be the story she’s looking for?

Instead of learning about civics, the boys thought Elizabeth said ‘comics’. She decides to get them away from their new obsession, and into the outdoors. Here we are, 100 years later, still trying to get kids off their phones.  Elizabeth knows what she’s doing!

Mike and Mei return from their honeymoon, hiding that it was a bit of a disaster. Mike carries his bride over the threshold into mayhem. It seems ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred paid Mike’s place a visit. Will a leaking roof and rodents test the newly-weds? Mei jumps onto realestate.com.au to find a new abode.

Governor Buchard is in Capital City, looking rather important answering his phone.

Edwin arrives, bringing news on poll numbers and trying to take the national park naming rights. He wants to name it after the Irwins, but they’ve already got Australia Zoo. Don’t tell Rosie!

Elizabeth instills the value of nature, encouraging the kids to explore their surroundings. They discover an animal trail in the national park, using cow bells to scare off the dinosaurs and wolves.

Cadet Clumsy, I mean, Oliver, isn’t spilling any tea, but he’s spilling coffee everywhere.  Nathan enlists his help to compare files and use fancy words like modus operandi.

Soon, he impresses Nathan with his hard work connecting the dots and colouring the criminal headshots.

Edwin’s on the campaign trail, and the national park trail, planning boy scout headquarters at Goldie National Park.  He introduces Lucas to Miss Edie Martell, a lawyer who argues the need for ranches to use the planned area.  Will they reach a compromise? And fall in love?

Mike and Mei are airing their dirty laundry, and furniture, on the front lawn.

Henry is busy at the orchard, enlisting Joseph’s help with both the physical and spiritual aspects of what to do with the abundance of food.  Joseph speaks of Deuteronomy 24:19, “when you’re harvesting your crops, and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it, leave it for the foreigners, orphans and widows.”

Henry has the right idea to get the local kids to help harvest the crops, while earning money to purchase their weekly comic book series.

Elizabeth organises a banner to announce Rosie’s radio show, but alas, the Queen of the Airwaves is not impressed.  She is in a fluster about not having anything to talk about (Rosie? Really?)

Mei and Faith are discussing open windows and closed doors, while Bill has his Detective hat on, questioning Mike like an insurance company rep after a storm damage claim.

Joseph, Henry, and the kids have set up a productive work environment outdoors, with music, hazelnuts, and a fire pit.  Emily surprises Henry with her knowledge of Dunn’s Review and The Wall Street Journal. Henry’s found his new CEO for Hazelnut Farms.

The entire town is gathered in the Saloon for Rosie’s radio show, with our favourite drama queen sounding like most of us as we prepare for a night out.

She panics like a reality tv producer, looking to create drama rather than embrace the story as it is.

Enter, Florence. Complete with tin foil hat, talking of aliens and far away planets.

Lee has been playing lackey, with Edwin wanting him out of the way.  Lucas is having second thoughts about the ranchers and national park square footage.  Lee has some stern words, reminding Lucas that he is a man of his word, and, in politics, that means more than votes. And beans.

Mike and Mei apologise to each other, sharing a romantic dinner at the place of their proposal, making plans to live in a shoebox. Or Mei’s apartment.

Elizabeth hosts a potluck.  Is that the sweet smell of Rosie’s apple pie, or the blossoming of young love between Oliver and Allie?

Henry relays to Joseph that he has everything he needs.  However, his friend wonders if the hazelnut market should be one for Henry to crack. Henry wants Joseph and Emily to join him in the Nutella endeavour.

Elizabeth and Nathan watch as Allie, Oliver, little Jack, and Bill race around the back yard playing tag.  They wonder if Oliver was sent to Nathan for a reason, and reflect on how lucky they are to have one another.

Memorable Quotes:

Elizabeth to Allie: “Journeys don’t always start with a destination.”

The kids to Elizabeth: “You’re the cat’s pyjamas, Mrs Thornton!”

Bill to Mike: “There are no winners in a fight like this.”

Faith to Mei: “My grandmother used to say, ‘In marriage, you can be right, or you can be happy’.”

Florence to Rosie: “Broccoli is for eating, not the flighting space race.”
