Season 12 Ep6 Recap – New Beginnings

BY: Rach Kayrooz for GOOD.

A new season has begun for the Hope Valley residents.  Allie is nursing a broken heart as the Autumn leaves begin to fall.

The bears and the wolves are running out of food (must have been the ex-tropical cyclone Alfred fanatics taking all the groceries from the Woolies shelves). Elizabeth is either allergic to Nathan’s cologne, or coming down with a cold.  She begins sweating at the sight of Nathan’s muscles when he pops by to check on her.

Edwin is impatient, yelling at the girls (or some squirrels?) as they move the Hope Valley Hazelnuts boxes from the office.

Fiona is helping Rosie with the radio technicalities and has the idea of being her co-host to provide two perspectives.  Is this how Breakfast Radio came about?  The Daily Dialogue radio show is born!

Ava is the Saloon’s entertainment, and Rosie is engaging Lucas to appear on her new radio show.  Allie gets a job with Uber Eats to take Elizabeth a grilled cheese sandwich, with Rosie jumping in to help.  How is Rosie managing to serve at the Saloon, do her radio show, run the paper, and mother Goldie, whilst also being a wife?

Allie invites Oliver to check on the salmon in the lake, failing at her attempt to make Wyatt jealous.

Inspector McGill from the Forensic Taskforce turns up and it seems Bill and Georgie are old friends.  Bill suggests he and Georgie travel on the train to visit Sonny Garrison in Granville Prison.

Minnie receives an envelope from the Schwartzmann School.  It was Joseph who applied on Angela’s behalf.  Minnie is worried that Angela will be alone in a city 1,000 miles from where they are.  Joseph requested a tour, hoping that Minnie will at least look at the college.

Rosie arrives to cool her best friend down with some medicine, after Elizabeth had been baking cupcakes for Allie’s broken heart.

Our favourite teacher is focused on the disappearing fish, and Rosie thinks it may have something to do with sharing the parkland with cattle. This sparks an idea for the youth to question the Governor on her radio show.

Ava comes to see Nathan who has discovered the missing green trunk at the lost n found. But why isn’t Ava that happy?  Is it even her trunk?

Nathan checks up on Elizabeth, who is delirious from her fever, and pondering over the English language.  She even asks Nathan to put on his Serge!

Allie and Oliver begin their investigation into the salmon, and discover the water is quite warm.  Everything is heating up in Hope Valley! Allie leads Oliver astray into McGinty’s back woods, with cupcakes the reward for trespassing!

Our two young sleuths discover the cows are entering the water, disturbing the silt and causing an algae bloom that prevents the fish from spawning.  By golly, they’ve got it!  At least two students have listened in science class.

But who is that riding up the path?  Allie and Oliver hide in the bushes, with the young Cadet feeling protective of his new friend.  He confesses that his Mum isn’t back east, but in prison, and he never really knew her.  He doesn’t want to jeopardise his Cadetship, and feels many people expect him to turn out like her.  He sticks to the rules so he doesn’t prove them right.

Bill and Georgie are on the train, discussing old times.  And radiology.

Could this be a new romance brewing, or just the smell of coffee on the train?

Avery and McGill interview Garrison, wanting to get the lowdown on Toddy Davis, who’s trafficking the stolen loot of coins.

Nathan is visiting with Elizabeth to nurse her back to health.  She reflects on her teenage heartbreak with Benedict Cumberbatch (or was that Benedict Harlow?)

Allie is eating up the wonderful soup from Chef Nathan, before a pep talk about being with someone who is worthy of you. Awww, Nathan!

Bill and Georgie are back on the train to Hope Valley, opening their hearts to one another and reminiscing about their withheld feelings back in the day. Is this the blossoming of a beautiful relationship, Hearties?

Elizabeth has arrived at the stables, where Nathan is chopping wood and splashing water on his face like a Brut 33 ad.

But it was just a fever dream.

Although, Elizabeth wakes up to find Nathan sitting next to her, reading a book. And says what we’re all thinking.

The next morning at school, multi-faceted Rosie is stepping in as the sub, with the children making cards for Elizabeth. They prepare for a field trip, to “put civics into action”.  The boys think she said, “put comics into action.”

Edwin is pestering Fiona as to who will be interviewing Lucas on the radio.  Enter the kids!

Opal wants a grilled cheese, while Allie grills Lucas on the issue of the declining salmon population, schooling him on their vital ecosystem.  Hope Valley has a future Environmental Scientist!

Fiona is preparing the salon for sale, confiding in Joseph that she hasn’t accepted her suitor’s proposal.  She knows what she wants, she just doesn’t know how to get there.  Joseph recognises that she wants to do God’s work.

Allie visits Oliver at the stables, bringing him a cupcake. She shares their commonality of having a parent in prison and how it doesn’t reflect on who they are. He shares their cupcake.

Oliver sharing his last Rolo

Fiona and Rosie are visiting Elizabeth, with the children’s get-well cards.  The friends encourage Hope Valley’s teacher to write up her curriculum.  Perhaps not the parts that she wrote when under the influence of Rosie’s cough syrup!

Minnie and Joseph are discussing the future for Angela.  They want her to have her own life but Minnie is also concerned for her daughter’s wellbeing. Joseph suggests moving forward one step at a time.

Ava’s trunk arrives, but she’s missing the keys to unlock it.  Lee offers a Bunnings screwdriver.  Will he unlock the truth about this new visitor?

Meanwhile, Nathan and Elizabeth are filming a Napisan laundry ad, or Nathan’s having a fever dream of his own.

Trust Scout to pull him back to reality.

Memorable Quotes:

Elizabeth: “Heartbreak is a lot like illness.  It’s up and it’s down before it’s over.”

Nathan (to Elizabeth): “I can’t believe that anyone would choose birds over you.”

Elizabeth: “Love isn’t about imagining who you want someone to be. It’s about knowing who they really are, and letting them know you.”

Nathan (to Allie): “You deserve someone who is worthy of your regard, of you. You’re strong, and brave, and you don’t need someone’s attention to know who you are.”

Georgie (to Bill): “It seems we both played it a little too close to the vest.”
