Fun Summer Holiday Activities for Kids That Won’t Break the Bank

BY: GOOD.

Summer holidays are full of long, sunny days, boundless energy and the never-ending question: “What are we doing today?”
The good news is you don’t need expensive outings or complicated plans to keep kids entertained. Some of the best summer memories come from simple, creative, low-cost fun – and plenty of it is right on our doorstep.

Here are some easy, budget-friendly ideas for a summer filled with joy, imagination and adventure.

🌊 1. Backyard Water Play

You don’t need a pool for kids to have a splash!
Try:

  • Buckets, sponges and cups
  • A sprinkler or slip ‘n slide
  • A “boat race” using leaves or bark in a shallow trough
Hours of fun for the price of… water.

🌳 2. Nature Treasure Hunts

Make a list of things to find – a feather, something yellow, a smooth rock, something that smells nice – then head outside.
Parks, backyards and nature trails become exciting adventure zones when kids are on a mission.

🎨 3. DIY Craft Time Using Recycled Materials

Pull out cardboard, empty boxes, bottle lids, string, paper – and let kids build:

  • Robots
  • Fairy houses
  • Mini cities
  • Puppets
It sparks creativity and uses what you already have.

📚 4. Library Adventures

Local libraries often run free school holiday events: craft days, storytime, scavenger hunts and more. Even without events, choosing new books is a magical outing in itself. Kids can choose whatever they like and the get to take it home – for FREE!

🌞 5. Picnic at a Local Park

Pack snacks, take a ball, and you’ve got an instant outing.
Tip: Let the kids plan the menu and even make the sandwiches – they’ll love it.

🎥 6. Backyard Movie Night

Hang a sheet, grab a projector (or just cuddle up inside), make popcorn and enjoy a family movie night. Find a great movie on GOOD.
Kids can even make tickets and “run the cinema.”

🔍 7. Mini Scientists: Backyard Experiments

Try simple, safe activities like:

  • Making a volcano with bicarb and vinegar
  • Observing bugs
  • DIY bird feeders
Learning disguised as fun = win-win.

🚴‍♀️ 8. Explore a New Walking or Bike Path

Kids love the novelty of a new route. Take scooters or bikes and turn it into a mini-expedition.

🍦 9. Make Your Own Ice Blocks

Blend fruit with water or yoghurt and freeze.
Cheap, healthy and so refreshing on hot days.

🎭 10. Home Theatre

Let the kids put on a play, dance routine or talent show.
Make it extra fun with costumes, a curtain and a “programme” they create themselves.

🪁 11. Kite Day at the Beach or Park

Kites are inexpensive, and running along the sand or grass to get one flying is childhood joy at its purest.

💛 12. Visit an Op Shop for a $5 Challenge

Give each child $5 and challenge them to find:

  • A book
  • A game
  • A treasure
It turns thrifting into a game and teaches great values, too. A great rainy day excursion.
A Summer to Remember, Without the Stress

The best summer holidays don’t come from spending lots of money. They come from time together, creativity, sunshine and the freedom to slow down. With a little imagination, every day can hold a small adventure.

Here’s to a joyful, memory-filled summer for you and your kids! ☀️🌈
