Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world lace up their boots and begin walking one of history’s most famous pilgrimages.

Known as El Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St James, this ancient network of trails stretches across Europe, eventually leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have travelled these paths seeking adventure, healing, purpose, forgiveness or simply time to reflect away from the noise of everyday life. Today, the Camino remains one of the world’s most extraordinary long-distance walks, attracting people of every age, culture and belief.

Among those pilgrims in 2014 were two lifelong friends from Idaho: Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray.

Born just days apart, Justin and Patrick had shared a lifetime of adventures together. As teenagers, however, Justin was diagnosed with a rare progressive neuromuscular disease that gradually robbed him of the use of his arms and legs. Over the years, he became completely dependent on a wheelchair. Yet despite the challenges, Justin refused to let his condition define his life.

Then came an idea that sounded impossible.

Justin had heard about the Camino de Santiago and wondered aloud whether he could ever experience it himself. Patrick’s response was immediate and simple.

“I’ll push you.”

Those three words would become the beginning of an adventure neither of them could have imagined. An adventure captured in the new documentary now streaming on GOOD, I’LL PUSH YOU.

Together, with help from family, friends and complete strangers they met along the way – they pushed, lifted and carried Justin’s wheelchair across nearly 800 kilometres (500 miles) of mountains, rocky trails, forests and ancient villages over 34 days. There were moments when the terrain was so steep the wheelchair had to be lifted by multiple people. Other days brought exhaustion, frustration and uncertainty. Yet time and again, fellow pilgrims stepped forward without being asked, embodying one of the Camino’s defining characteristics: a spirit of generosity and community.

One of the most remarkable things about the Camino is that, although every pilgrim walks the same route, no two journeys are ever the same. Some people begin for religious reasons, others for personal healing, grief, adventure or simply the challenge of completing one of the world’s great walks. Along the way, strangers become friends, conversations become life-changing and the rhythm of walking day after day creates space for reflection that’s increasingly rare in modern life. It’s often said that people finish the Camino as different people from those who first set out.

That’s certainly true for Justin and Patrick.

While Patrick physically pushed Justin’s wheelchair across Spain, Justin challenged Patrick in ways that couldn’t be measured in kilometres. Their friendship deepened, their perspectives shifted and both men discovered that accepting help from others is every bit as courageous as giving it. The documentary beautifully explores themes of vulnerability, faith, sacrifice and what it truly means to carry one another through life’s hardest seasons.

What makes I’LL PUSH YOU so compelling isn’t simply the achievement of completing the Camino. It’s the reminder that none of us are designed to travel through life alone. We all need people who will walk beside us, encourage us and, sometimes, quite literally push us when we no longer have the strength ourselves.

Beautifully filmed against the stunning landscapes of northern Spain, I’LL PUSH YOU is more than an adventure documentary. It’s a moving celebration of friendship, resilience and the extraordinary things that become possible when people choose to carry one another.
